Those who can spend a longer time in Bangkok and who have already visited the famous places in the city are recommended to visit the following famous attractions located in the suburbs of Bangkok or nearby provinces. Some places are suitable for a half-day tour while others may need a full day. Due to the distance, it is much more convenient to buy a package tour than to go by yourself.

 

 

Samutprakan Crocodile Farm & Zoo

 

Here is the world's largest crocodile farm with over 60,000 crocs in stock. Visitors can also view a crocodile wrestling show and elephant shows which are presented several times daily. The Erawan Museum: The museum of three-headed elephant

 

Location: 99/9 Muang County, Samut Prakan Province

 

Located in Samut Prakan Province (29 km south of Bangkok) is a graceful museum, which contains a priceless collection of antiques. Many of them, in the past, were viewed as sacred objects that brought fertility and prosperity to the land. The building itself was designed and built in a unique style.

 

Standing on the museum’s rooftop is a statue of Airavata (Erawan in Thai), a three-headed elephant in Hindu mythology. The Erawan is not only the god Indra’s vehicle but also a symbol of the eastern cosmography. Since its completion, the elephant has become one of the most revered objects in the province.

Samphran Elephant Ground & Zoo

 

The zoo boasts an elephant theme show which includes elephants training by mahouts, elephants at work, dancing, playing football and scenes of ancient elephant-back battle. The zoo also includes a crocodile farm with more than 10,000 crocodiles, where daily crocodile wrestling shows are held.

Siam Cultural Park

 

Location : Bang Phae County, Ratchaburi Province (100 km west of Bangkok)

 

Apart from displaying a selection of lifelike figures of Thai and international personages and famous Buddhist monks, Siam Cultural Park collects Thai artistic works, cultural relics, and beautiful articles showing local Buddhists’ ways of life and stores them for posterity. The Park is covered with dense greenery, fresh air, and a serene ambience.

Rose Garden

 

Location : 30 km southwest of Bangkok on Phetkasem Highway

 

Covering an area of over 20 hectares, it is a beautiful flower garden resort, noted for its scenic riverside landscape. At the resort, there are a Thai cultural village and a restaurant. It also stages cultural shows, folk dances and martial arts at 14.30 every day.

Ancient City (Muang Boran)

 

Location : Samut Prakan province on the Sukhumwit Highway

 

Ancient City, covering about 320 acres, is the world's largest outdoor museum, and presents about 100 scaled-down replicas of Thailand's historic monuments and works of art. The structures are sited orderly in accordance with their geographical locations from the northern to the southern parts.

 

Though it takes an entire day to cover the area, it's worth a visit, especially for those who don't have enough time to tour the real places.

Ko Kret

 

Location : An islet in the middle of the Chao Phraya River a little way from Bangkok's northern edge.

 

This islet, which is worth a one-day visit, is home of a Mon community that immigrated from their homeland in Burma more than 300 years ago. The islet is well known as a centre of earthenware production -- the Mons' inherited art, and a market of authentic Mon-style pottery. An exhibit of local pottery and a demonstration of its making can be seen at the Ceramics Centre.

 

Apart from earthenware, here is also a centre of Thai desserts, many of which are of traditional kinds and rare to find elsewhere.

 

Another major attraction of Ko Kret is its ancient temples of the Ayutthaya period (1350 - 1767), e.g. Wat Paramaiyikawat, Wat Klang Kret and Wat Chimplee.

Accessibility

By boat: Take an express boat from Tha Chang Pier to Pak Kret pier at Sanam Nua Temple. Then take a ferry to Ko Kret. The whole trip takes about an hour.

By bus: Take a No. 33 bus at Sanam Luang to Pak Kret and take a boat to the islet.

 

 

King Rama IX Royal Park

 

Location : Off Srinakarin Road

 

Located on the eastern outskirt of Bangkok, the park covers an area of about 80 hectares. It is the largest botanical park in Bangkok built to commemorate the auspicious 60th birthday of H.M. the King in 1987. The major attraction is the Royal Pavilion displaying a replica of the work room of H.M. the King containing all his working equipment and reference materials.

 

The park is best visited in the cool season when abundant flowers are in full bloom. Moreover, a flower festival is held here annually around early December.

Phuttha Monthon Park & Utthayan Road

 

Location : Pin Klao-Nakhon Chai Si Road, 24 km west of Bangkok

 

Covering an area of about 400 hectares, this large Buddhist park was built to celebrate the completion of the 25th century of the Buddhist era.The main attraction is the magnificent Walking Buddha statue 16 m high that can be seen from afar. There are replicas of important places in the life of the Buddha, e.g. the places where he was born, where he attained enlightenment and where he reached nirvana.

 

The park, with a great number of shady trees, features artificial lakes which contains lots of fish, and a botanical garden, part of which are plants that are mentioned in Buddhist history.

 

Another outstanding feature of Phuttha Monthon Park is Utthayan Road, the 3.8 km road leading to the front gate of the park. It is magnificently lined with over 700 lamps, each adorned at the top of the post with the golden figure of the mythical bird called hansa. One will have a more splendid view of the road if coming at night when all lamps are turned on.

Safari World

 

Location : Km 9 of Ram Inthra Road

 

Safari World is a drive-in zoological park divided into two parts. The first part is Safari Park, an open zoo with wild animals like zebras, deer, giraffes, tigers, lions, bears, elephants and others. While passing along the driveway, visitors can observe the animals living in a natural environment. The second part is the Marine Park where there are a variety of marine animals and shows of trained dolphins, birds, seals and apes. There are also several restaurants and game stalls. The park provides a coach service for visitors who do not drive in.
