The Chao Phraya River, and the Old Moat and so known as Rattanakosin Island. Situated here are the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Temple of the Reclining Buddha and a few other famous Buddhist temples, the Giant Swing and sections of the ancient city walls.
Many of the buildings represent religious and royal sites from around Thailand as well as from the past. The throne hall at right reproduces one which was destroyed 200 years ago when the old capital of Ayuthaya was sacked by the Burmese. Inside are some quite exquisite examples of Thai wall paintings. The old city area (Rattanakosin) and the riverside are becoming popular areas near Bangkok's temples but if you're a shopaholic, head for Sukhumvit, Ploenchit and Rachaprasong.
